In 2006-2007 Radio Rootz taught at Economics and Finance High School (E&F), Vanguard High School, South Bronx Academy for Applied Media (SBAAM), and Manhattan Comprehensive Day and Night High School (MCDN) in New York and the Cesar Chavez High School in Washington DC.Check out the schools that have participated for this year here to your right ----->
For the first time, Rootz (NY) was able to staff each school with two teachers; a senior staff member with experience teaching the Rootz curriculum who served as a mentor to a youth staff member. Our youth staff have experience training their peers in radio production, and now they are gaining the skills to teach our media literacy in the classroom. We have also continued teaching a Saturday intensive class.
The work produced by our students is fantastic and diverse! From SBAAM’s sports news report on the Mets visiting their school to Rataysha at Finance’s insightful piece on love, to the Vanguard student’s reporting trip to Cambodia. One of the more innovative pieces created by Rootz youth this year was a radio novella with six characters who get stuck in an elevator and, as they try to get out, play out a dramatic sequence that deals directly with critical immigration issues. The work displayed creativity in not only creating radio, but dealing with important current events. We are really proud of all of our students.
