A group of 46 settlers founded the City of Los Angeles, twelve years after the Spanish began their conquest and occupation of California. 40 years later Mexico took control of the city after having gained their independence from Spain. 25 years after that it was snatched up by the United States in their quest for manifest destiny. The American City of Los Angeles later became the setting for events such as the exclusion and internment of Japanese American citizens, the Watts Riots, the mass criminalization of people of color, intense gang violence, and the destructive crack epidemic. Now I wonder how things might be different had Spain and Europe stayed on their side of the Atlantic.
