An angry crowd of white rioters in Atlanta Georgia began to disperse marking the end of a three-day race riot. Racial tension had evolved into racial violence after multiple accusations were made that black men were raping white women. A group of vengeful white men quickly formed and began attacking black residents in what is now the Five Points Downtown Atlanta area. During the mob violence, at least 25 black people were killed and over 70 were injured. Although the riot made it into newspapers around the world, Atlanta’s politicians worked hard to keep it quiet. They must have been successful seeing as how this incident has not been taught in US schools and the victims were never commemorated.
