Republican politician Margaret Chase Smith was elected to the US Senate in Maine, becoming the first woman to have served in both houses of Congress. Smith later became the first Senator to oppose the actions of Senator McCarthy in a speech entitled ‘Declaration of Conscience’, where she claimed that the rights of the American people were being undermined. Smith delivered this speech after the Senate Committee in charge of the McCarthy Era investigations replaced her with Senator Richard Nixon. Smith was also a staunch supporter of the Vietnam War – I guess her concern for human rights didn’t transcend US borders.
