Union leaders and workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company were forced to end the Pullman Strike. This three-month strike had been organized by the American Railway Union under Eugene Debs in reaction to a 28% wage cut. Using its extensive influence in the railway industry, the Union shut down the operation of Pullman cars and factories. As the boycott began to attract national attention, railroad companies obtained a government order banning union leaders from supporting it in any way. When labor organizers ignored the ban, President Grover Cleveland ordered over 2,000 Army Troops into Chicago on the premise that the strike was interfering with the delivery of US mail.
