On this day, November 9, in 1848

German revolutionary Robert Blum, was executed in Vienna. Throughout his life Blum moved around Germany writing politically motivated plays and poetry, and contributing to liberal newspapers. After becoming a talented organizer and leading figure in many of the nations leftist circles, Blum was sent to Frankfurt to join the National Assembley as the leader of the national liberal faction. Only months later, Blum moved again, this time to Vienna to join the revolutionary forces of Germany's 1848 rebellion. He was quickly pursued, arrested, and executed four days later. It says a lot about our global society when so many amazing revolutionaries are lost to execution and political imprisonment.
