The Treaty of Fort Pitt was signed by the United States of America and the Lenape people, becoming the first formal treaty between a Native American group and the American Government. The treaty gave the United States permission to travel through the Delaware territory and guaranteed the American troops anything they might need during their war against Britain. The treaty also formally recognized the Lenape as a sovereign nation guaranteeing their territorial rights. Within a year the Lenape began to express their dissatisfaction with the treaty. After American settlers murdered a Lenape leader, the Lenape decided to join the British in their war against the United States. Can you blame them?
