Class Aim/Objective/Theme Introduce new semester, work on What's in a Name exercise, introduce concept of self-exploration.
Brief Summary including curriculum exercises you did We started by having them do a self-evaluation of what they had learned, and for new students to write why they wanted to be in the class. Then we listened to the school security story one more time, and had them fill out the listening sheet. We also added a question about what they would do differently next time, which they were really thoughtful about. They said they wanted to include interviews with school security guards, and that they had tried but the guards said they weren't allowed to be recorded. They also had good thoughts about ambient sound. Then we went over some tips for a good interview and good mic technique, just for refresher. Then we had them write about their names, based on the "What's in a Name" sheet I made from the World Savvy workbook. We ended the class by having them write three interview questions to ask their parent or guardian about their names, since they are interviewing them before the next class.
What worked well? They had good input into the discussion, so overall things went relatively smoothly.
Next Time I'd... I needed to get them moving more. They have a ton of energy and if we don't get them moving and up and out of their seats sometime during class they start to get totally wild by the end of class.
Class Concerns and QuestionsI'm feeling challenged by the addition of one really disruptive student. She was talking all class and being difficult, clearly testing us. I was really clear that we are going to be working independently this semester, and that they will need to hand things in on time, be focused, and that we do not have time for people to be disruptive. We are going to talk to her next week if her behavior continues to be a problem. Rachel and I met with one student, Chanel, after class, because she really wanted to come back to class but had not done a single interview last semester. We had agreed that we would let her back into the class but give her a two week testing period, to allow her to show us that she can work and be focused. We explained our concerns to her, and explained that she was going to need to step up and show us she wants to be here and will work. She said she was really shy and nervous about interviewing, which was why she hadn't done any. She also said she was working hard to change, and that she had been focused and not talking today in class, which was true. We talked about how we can help her get over her shyness, which was great. It made me want to sit down and do one-on-ones with everyone, especially going into a time of them picking their own topics. It's also good to hear everyone's concerns, and where they feel strong and weak. We are going to try to do that in the coming weeks.Wednesday Rachel will do interviewing games with them, and I am going to look over the World Savvy book and see if I can find an exercise in there for her to use. Next Monday, we may have COMPUTERS finally, so she will have them edit.
