2008 Fellows

Beatriz DeJesus :: Beatriz De Jesus is currently a senior at Vanguard High School. She was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and moved to New York City at the age of four. Ever since She can remember she has been fascinated with traveling and learning about different cultures. Last summer she traveled to Cambodia along with classmate and friend Irene. Together they created a radio piece through Radio Rootz to inform others about the country and the trip. Traveling to South East Asia was eye opening and she learned issues that are occurring around the world. She hopes to learn more about international issue next fall in college. She will attend Lafayette College in Easton, PA thanks to the POSSE Foundation Scholarship. Sidra Khatkhatay :: Sidra khatkhatay started off as intern in SMOP 07. Sidra didn't know much about media until SMOP and learning and interacting with different types of media she discovered a new found interest. Learning about new and different types of media and creating a documentary at the end of the summer she can stand tall and say she is very proud of it today. Working with other youths her age and hearing all types of recreations of media she was inspired o keep her love for media alive. In her free time she enjoys eating, swimming, reading , writing and spending time with her family. After graduating high school she plans on going away to college and maybe someday majoring in journalism. Shaun Abreu :: Shaun Abreu, 17, was born in Washington Heights in the Presbyterian Hospital. Shaun was introduced to Radio Rootz when he was in the 6th grade at Crossroads middle school in Spanish Harlem. He produced a radio feature that has been played on Mother's Day every single year on WBAI. Shaun now loves Radio and Media Literacy! In addition to his love for media, Shaun also participates in many extra-curricular activities. Shaun works for the New York Public Library on a 113th street on Broadway. He attends a program at Columbia University called Double Discovery Center that will gear him up for College. He also is apart of the Food and Fitness Initiative, a program that wants every person in the United States and beyond to be healthy. Shaun has represented the Food and Fitness Initiative in Arizona at a national conference. Last but not least, Shaun is also a key youth member of a planning team for the creation of a new public high school in Carnarsie, Brooklyn. He has given extreme dedication to the Principal, of this new school, his former teacher of his Mr. Correa, to open up this new school. In the course of this work Shaun has been quoted in the Daily News and spoken in the community about the importance of the new Nate Robinson :: Nathaniel Robinson was born on February 5, 1990. He attends the High School of Economics & Finance in lower Manhattan. Nate loves music especially Hip-Hop and R&B. His favorite rappers are Jay-Z, the Notorious B.I.G. and T.I. This year Nate is graduating and he was named captain of his school's basketball team. Nate joined Radio Rootz through his school. He loves learning about the media and the tools on how to become a good journalist. When he graduates Nate plans studying communications in college, thanks to the education and guidance from the Radio Rootz staff. Mihai Malciu :: Mihai Malciu is from Romania. He likes to travel, and he has lived in the Netherlands, Nigeria, Hungary, and now in the United States for 3 years. He had many opportunities that helped him know what he wants to be in the future.<br /> When he comes to the United States in 2005 he joined Radio Rootz. During the summer of 2007 he was a Radio Rootz peer trainer. Through the Radio Rootz experience he got an interest in media. What he likes most and is good at recording, interviewing, and helping his peers.<br /> Now he is a student at Kingsborough community college where he studies Broadcasting Technology & Management. However, last year he got certified in cisco networking and Computer A+ repair. Manny Diaz :: Hey my name is Manuel but everybody knows me as Manny. I have a pretty big family and I am second oldest of seven children. I'm 17 years old and I've been playing music, specifically guitar, for about 4 years now. Attending college is not only mandatory in my family but a necessity for self respect in it. I can speak Spanish fluently, mostly because I'm Hispanic, and enjoy arguing my point across even though 99% of the time I'm wrong. Media is not only an interesting topic but a topic that has to be studied in order to grasp truth in this day and age. I'm excited to continue this internship and learn more about media's faults and strong points.  

Leslie Gonzaga :: Leslie Gonzaga is a 15 year old girl born on September 1. She is the eldest of five daughters and currently attends St. Joseph High School. She's in the tenth grade and the first time in her whole school life that she has been able to make the school honor roll! For Leslie it's not all labout school work, she also enjoys spending her free time with friends, on the computer, the phone, if not simply just sleeping. No matter what, Leslie's up for the challenge even though she doesn't know her life holds for her in the future, she believes that there is only one life and it has to be lived to the fullest. Kristal Gaham :: Kristal Graham is 18 years old and a senior at St. Catherine's Academy. She is on her way to college, and has to make a final decision about which college she will attend. For two years now, she has been apart of the Junior Scholars program which teaches youth black history and media. After an introduction to radio through Junior Scholars she became involved in Radio Rootz. Through Radio Rootz her interest changed from majoring in Economics to Radio Journalism. She plans to major in Broadcast Journalism. Ever since she was 12 she's set goals and as she matured she realized it was as important to achieve the goals set. For example, she has achieved honor roll throughout her high school career. Her most imense goal is to own her own radio station. Jonathan DeJesus :: Jonathan De Jesus grew up in Spanish Harlem. He is 17 years old and is a sophomore at Vanguard High School. He started Radio Rootz when he was 15. He is participating in Radio Rootz to obtain full knowledge of the media industry. His ultimate dream is to become a Latin singer. After Vanguard, he wants to attend Five Town College in Long Island because it is a small school that deals with everything from journalism to broadcasting to recording engineering. Jaleel Huntley :: Kyra Joseph :: Crystal Santana :: My name is  but my close ones call me cherry. I am a creative sixteen year old who has her life on point. You’re looking at the future Criminal justice major or even the future United States Coast Guard commander. Who knows where I might be in ten yeas from now, but where ever it might be I will be great. I am an outgoing, curly hair; hazel eyed Boriqua Bella who thrives for what she wants. I am enrolled at Vanguard High School scheduled to graduate June of 210. I have been currently rocken to the beats as a hip hop/ salsa dancer. Dancing is my passion and I let know one hold me back. I am also apart of the one and only Radio Rootz Crew. We have a mind as youth and we speak it. We only got one life to live, so live it to the fullest! One mic, that’s all it takes.
