Radio Rootz started in one New York city public school in Harlem back in 2000. Teaching 6th-8th graders at Crossroads Middle School the art of radio production, Rootz reporters were in demand.

Our youth reportage has been sought out locally and nationally, from the BBC world service to Pacifica radio stations nationwide! Carlton Taylor, an 8th grader at Crossroads, was hired back in 2001 to produce radio for the BBC program "Outlook". Check out his work:

Rootz youth have created compelling and award-winning radio which has not only been aired on radio stations nationwide but has also been used by community based groups to educate on issues of critical importance to the community. Our work is not just about having a voice, it's about young people actively working to better ourselves and our communities ... and our mic is our weapon!

The 2010 Radio Rootz team of seven Summer Leaders/Youth Trainers and Coordinator have a collective total of over 15 years of experience with Radio Rootz. Their summer job is to creatively lead skill-training workshops, keep the groups focused and professional, and make sure that everyone is still laughing at themselves -and together- at the end of the day. The leaders agree that as they also grow and learn a lot from the interns.

Meet the awesome Radio Rootz youth leaders:

Sean Bell, Summer Leader/Youth Trainer

Sean is from Brooklyn, NY but was born in Jamaica.  He’s a great person to be around.  Sean first joined Radio Rootz in high school, which prepared him and gave him skills he would use in college.  After he graduated high school, Sean finished college with a degree in recording arts. He can edit and mix down audio, read people, sometimes be sarcastic, and knows how to have a good time.

Kristal Graham, Summer Leader/Youth Trainer

Kristal Graham is 20 years old and when she is not a training youth radio production and journalism both in school and out of school, she is coordinating events and reporting for Radio Rootz and People's Production House as one of the staff Program Associates. Kristal took part in the Junior Scholars program which teaches youth black history and media. After an introduction to radio through Junior Scholars she became involved in Radio Rootz. Through Radio Rootz her interest changed from majoring in Economics to Radio Journalism. Kristal now majors in Broadcast Journalism. Ever since she was 12 she has been goal-driven. For example, she achieved honor roll throughout her entire high school career. Her most immense goal is to own her own radio station.

Sidra Khatkhatay, Summer Leader/Youth Trainer

Sidra Khatkhatay attends Baruch College, where she majors in Business Management and minors in Journalism. Sidra started off as summer intern with Radio Rootz in 2007. She did not know much about media until that summer, and after learning and interacting with different types of media she discovered a new interest. Sidra created a documentary by the end of that summer. Today she can stand tall and say she is very proud of the work she accomplished. Working with other youths her age and learning all types of media inspired her to keep her love for journalism alive. In her free time Sidra enjoys eating, swimming, reading, writing, and spending time with her family.

One of the first radio exercises for the summer interns is to create an audio bio. They learn to write about their interests and accomplishments in a way that is appropriate for radio, voice and record it, and digitally edit their narration with the music of their choice.

This year, the eight interns kick butt in multiple languages and art forms: we have a brown belt in Karate, multi-linguists, graffiti art, a basketball star. There's more, but we'll let you hear for yourself.

This will be Angela's second summer with Radio Rootz, after her first Rootz class in 2007 at Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School. She has produced stories about how nothing can hold her back, the toxic waste in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and how youth organizing makes a difference.

Oscar is a part of Youth Action Changes Things, which is a part of La Unión in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Radio is not the only thing that you'll find Oscar involved in because he's a really active guy.

Reena just finished South Asian Youth Action's ARISE community organizing program. She's looking to hone her radio skills because she hopes to pursue journalism in the future.

Our 9th graders from EBC Bushwick High School enjoyed a fun day at Univision Radio, located on Madison Avenue. "I can't believe they're 3 radio stations in one office" wrote Marvin Martinez, in his journal.  The eventful tour included stops at the three studios housed in the building for X96.3 (Tropical/Latin Station), 92.3 La Que Buena (Regional Mexican Station), and Wado 1280AM (Spanish News Station). The highlight of the day was when midday host, Jako, opened the mics up to our students. Click here to watch the video
