What leads to homelessness? There are certainly many factors leading to homelessness, but one thing that has also been worsening the situation is the massive gentrification that Harlem and many other NYC neighborhoods have been witnessing in recent years.

In East Harlem, the change to the neighborhood is visible with new condos being built on nearly every street. The most ambitious development is the new East River Mall on 116th street on the FDR. Construction on the mall has increased traffic in the neighborhood, ultimately affecting the residents. Our reporter, Jacqueline Kook brings us a report that looks at how residents are reacting to a recent community board vote to bring Cosco in as an addition to East Harlem.
