American soldiers, under President Bush, wreaked havoc in the streets of Panama in a military operation that claimed to battle drug trafficking and protect democracy in Panama. In actuality, Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega had previously been a highly paid CIA informant and his involvement in the drug trade was no secret to the U.S. After discovering that Noriega was providing services to Cubans and Sandinistas, America invaded Panama. Many people recognize this attack as a typical American control tactic, pointing out that the invasion was strategically carried out two months before a Nicaraguan election in which the Sandinistas were likely to be re-elected.
